Naveganto also serves the same route as Ultramar, but it is not the most well-known company. Ultramar ferries were a pleasure to use, and I highly recommend them.

Puerto Juarez Ferry Terminal is modern and has bathrooms and an OXXO shop. There’s also a cafe that serves food and beverages.


Puerto Juarez Ferry Terminal is located just 3.5 km (2.1 miles) from downtown Cancun. It takes only 10 minutes to drive there.

You can take either the following routes to Puerto Juarez, from downtown Cancun:

A taxi will take you from downtown Cancun up to Puerto Juarez for around 100 MXN. Before you get in the taxi, make sure to agree on a price.

From downtown Cancun, take the public bus R1. Ask the driver “Puerto Juarez” to ensure it takes you there. Not all buses go there. The ticket is less than 1 USD.

From Cancun, take the Isla Mujeres Ferry to reach Cancun Hotel Zone.

You can also take a ferry from Playa Tortugas or El Embarcadero to Isla Mujeres if you are staying in the Cancun Hotel Zone. These ferries are just as good as the one I recommend above but are less frequent and a lot more expensive.

If there are at least two people travelling together, it is cheaper to take a taxi to Puerto Juarez than take the ferry. It will take you less than 20 minutes to get there by taxi.

Book a private Catamaran From Cancun to Isla Mujeres

You don’t like the idea of taking a ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. There is an alternative but it may not be for you.

AGI, a private company, offers door to door service from Cancun’s airport to your hotel in Isla Mujeres. You’ll most likely travel by yacht if you choose a luxury transfer. This option is most luxurious, but also the most costly.

Avoid traveling on small boats if you are seasick. I strongly recommend the ferry as it is safe and reliable. If you do decide to charter a private boat to Isla Mujeres from Cancun, ensure that the operator has proper insurance and that the skipper is certified. Also, there is safety equipment aboard. It is always safer to ask more questions than you think and be safe.

Many luxury hotels in Isla Mujeres like Isla Mujeres Palace Resort All Inclusive or Zoetry Villa Rolandi offer their own private boats to Isla Mujeres. This is sometimes included in the hotel’s rate.

Many people don’t have the time to make a day trip from Cancun, Mexico to Isla Mujeres. Are you one of them? Perhaps the ferry isn’t the best choice.
