Margot Robbie is without a doubt one of the most sought-after performers of the last decade. Since stealing the show as the colorful supervillain Harley Quinn in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” and revisiting the character for 2020’s “Birds of Prey” and the reboot-slash-sequel “The Suicide Squad” in 2021, Robbie has soared to superstardom.
In addition, she has frequently been mentioned in awards season discussions, having received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing the title role in the 2017 Tonya Harding biopic “I, Tonya” and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in the 2019 fact-based drama “Bombshell” as one of the alleged targets of sexual harassment by Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow).
With a role as screen legend Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 revisionist Tinseltown comedy-drama “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” it’s safe to assume Robbie has made enough money over the last decade to stash in her mattresses and pillowcases — safe and secure places, as long as the bills stay there.
In a steamy Wolf of Wall Street sequence, Margot Robbie was subjected to several paper cuts.
Margot Robbie was one of a group of performers in “The Wolf of Wall Street” who recorded love scenes that they afterwards regretted. Robbie recorded many intimate sequences with Leonardo DiCaprio while playing Naomi Lapaglia, the fictitious second wife (through History vs. Hollywood) of rich stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), including one in which Naomi and Jordan had love on a bed of cash.
Fake currency was utilized in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” as it is in most films, and as it turns out, the bills — manufactured by famed movie moneymaker RJR Props (via CNN) – left Robbie with an interesting cautionary story to share. Robbie shouted in a 2017 interview with The Daily Beast, “All that money gave me a million paper cuts on my back! It isn’t as glamorous as it appears. If you ever want to have sex on top of a pile of money, don’t.”
One thing Robbie discovered is that the texture of movie money differs from the actual thing, and she discovered the extent of the harm such a discrepancy may cause through some surprising remarks from people on the set.
“Perhaps real money is a little softer, but fake money is like paper, and as I got out of bed and went around to get my robe, everyone gasped,” Robbie said during the interview. “‘What is it?’ I asked. ‘You look like you’ve been beaten a million times,’ they remarked. ‘You have a thousand crimson scratches on your back.'”
Robbie will also never forget one Wolf of Wall Street moment.
Margot Robbie’s awkward love scene with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio turned out to be one of several that stayed with the Australian actor long after the cameras stopped rolling. The actor of “Wolf of Wall Street” also disclosed to The Daily Beast which moment was the most insane to film. The scene she mentioned is perhaps one of the most iconic passages in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film.
“Every single moment was incredibly ridiculous,” Robbie said when asked which sequence was the most daring to commit to film by The Daily Beast. She went on, “The Quaalude scene, without a doubt. I remember sitting there thinking to myself, ‘I will never, ever film another scene like this again.'”
That once-in-a-lifetime scene — the Quaalude scene — comes in the closing act of “The Wolf of Wall Street” for those who need their memory refreshed. Jordan drives out to his country club at this point in the film to make a crucial call. Unfortunately, the Qualuudes he and Donnie (Jonah Hill) took, which he thought had expired, were still active. Jordan thinks he’s in severe danger over his business operations as the effects of the medication begin to take effect. Over the span of 10 minutes, Jordan has to crawl his way back to his vehicle, drive home, rage at an equally high Donnie for double-crossing him, and then prevent Donnie from choking on a slice of ham. Meanwhile, Naomi, who is pregnant, is left to worry. It’s no surprise that the incident had such an impact on Robbie.
“I’m sitting there [as Naomi], eight months pregnant, and Leo and Jonah are crawling about trying to strangle one other, and I’m trying not to laugh because they looked so silly,” Robbie explained. If you’re intrigued, you may see this notorious incident right now on YouTube.
