The train ride from Los Angeles to Pismo Beach takes less than four hours and costs $40 to $60. You can take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Union Station to Grover Beach Train Station. From there, you can either take a taxi (it’s a short ride), or the Line 21bus which costs only a few dollars.
Only 3 trains are available per day. If you don’t mind transfers, plan ahead. Make sure to take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. Other trains can take longer than 7 hours due to all the stops along the route.
How to get from San Francisco to Pismo Beach
Depending on traffic, it will take between 4 and 5 hours to drive from San Francisco. Distance from SF to Pismo Beach: 280 miles. There are two routes available. The US 101 S/Central Fwy is the shortest, while the I-5S takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Amtrak Bus is your best choice for public transportation. It departs twice daily from San Francisco – although one departure is at night. It takes approximately 6 hours to reach Grover Beach Train Station. You can either take the Line21 bus or a taxi from here. You can ask for directions to Pismo Beach if you get lost. It’s a popular spot!
It’s also possible to travel to Grover Beach using a combination bus and train. However, there will be many stops along the route and it will take you approximately nine hours to reach Grover Beach.
